Green Dining for Valentine’s Day
by Blake Frino
Have a Valentine already lined up? Perhaps, not. Who really needs one when you have the Earth. It offers you support even when you’re walking all over it and is there to catch you when you fall. But, if you happen to have someone else’s heart and are looking forward to February 14th, don’t forget that the Earth’s got your back, too.
When you are pining over where you and your date will go for your Valentine’s Day dinner, think of your health, as well as the environment. Choose a place that suits both of your needs, like an organic or vegetarian restaurant. You may even choose a place that is having a special pre-fix dinner, so you can have an intimate, slow food-type of meal.
Opting for a pesticide-, hormone-, and perhaps meat-free meal, means that you won’t consume any harming toxins, while incorporating an environmentally-friendly way of eating. With the growing desire to live and eat that way, a number of restaurants are purchasing purely organic food from local farmers to create scrumptious dishes for their diners.
LocalHarvest.org offers a list of organic restaurants located all over the United States. You can type in whatever city or zip code you would like to eat in, and see if there is a restaurant that appeals to your taste buds. Depending on where you live or are vacationing there are many romantic and organic hot spots to choose from.
The Border Grill in Santa Monica offers many vegetarian dishes (vegan requests also available), along with a 4-course Valentine’s Day dinner for $55. Brooklyn’s Smooch Café is an organic café and wine bar serving meals all day long. Canela Bistro in Sonoita, Arizona showcases produce and wine from local farmers, ranchers and vintners, while at the same time, supplementing the menu with vegetables and herbs from the owners’ own gardens. Bayona Restaurant in New Orleans offers gourmet dishes, including a daily vegetarian plate. For a prix-fix menu, Pace (”peace” in Italian) in Los Angeles, is serving an organic three-course meal for $75.
Eating kind with the Earth in mind is the way to go for you, your loved one, and the environment. So, on the holiday of corny sweetness, take your honey out for a delicious meal that is thoroughly enjoyable. Cheers the night with a fine organic wine and delectable Fair-Trade chocolate dessert.
